The Business of Opportunity

Lincoln-West High in Cleveland, Ohio, was the school that I’d have attended had my mother not been killed in an automobile accident back in the 1970s.

That horrible moment set in motion the circumstances that would lead me to boarding school in Massachusetts. Then college at Yale. And now my return to New Haven.

I can never know where life would have led had my mother survived and I had attended Lincoln-West, but I do know that there are great kids in every neighborhood and on every block.

Lincoln-West graduates Dartanyon Crockett and Leroy Sutton are amazing young men and their story is about what it takes to give young people an opportunity — and what that return on the investment can be.

I am proud to be in a city committed to the work of providing such opportunities to its students across every neighborhood. We will be introducing our 2013 cohort of New Haven Promise Scholars on August 7th at The Omni Hotel New Haven.

We can’t wait to see what their futures will hold.

  1. That link takes you to an ESPN feature video that is 20 minutes long, but it is definitely worth your time. Great story that illustrates why New Haven Promise is an asset to this community.
