About

Our scholarship is an annual award that covers up to full tuition, and tuition only, at a Connecticut public 2 or 4-year college or university. Here are the requirements for receiving a Promise scholarship:

  • You must be a New Haven resident and attend New Haven Public Schools or an approved charter school in the City of New Haven. If you’re new to the city as of at least your freshman year, you may still qualify for a percentage of the scholarship based on your length of residency in New Haven.
  • You have a positive disciplinary record during high school (no expulsions).
  •  You complete 40 hours of community service over four years of high school.
  • You have a 90% attendance record or better. In other words, you don’t miss more than 72 days in high school.
  • Have a cumulative 3.0 GPA or higher at graduation.

If you meet these requirements, you qualify for a Promise scholarship! We don’t cover the cost of books, fees, or housing while you’re at school, but we will cover whatever tuition expense remains after your federal and state government grants, if any. At up to $10,000 a year over four years — that’s $40,000!

To maintain your scholarship once you’re in college, you have to obtain a 2.0 GPA or higher per semester during your college-going years.

This is not a loan that has to be repaid; it’s a scholarship and our Promise to you.

Scholarship Scale

Our scholarship is scaled so even if you haven’t lived in New Haven for your entire education career, you may qualify for some scholarship money based on uninterrupted enrollment since ninth grade at the latest. The financial benefit is broken down in the table below:

More About Not-for-Profit Colleges and Universities

New Haven Promise covers up to 100% tuition at public colleges and universities in Connecticut. If you’re attending a not-for-profit school, that’s great! But we’re only able to cover a maximum of $2,500 a year toward the cost of tuition.

More About 4-year schools

After you graduate from high school, we’ll pay up to 4 years (8 semesters) of tuition. You can even defer your Promise scholarship for up to a year and we’ll reserve your money for you.

More About 2-year schools

Two-year schools are a great way to get an education and quickly join the workforce in the career you love. Promise will cover both years of your degree so long as it’s a public school. You must be enrolled full-time, too. You can move into a four-year degree and be eligible for up to two more years of scholarships, too! You can even defer your Promise scholarship for up to a year.
